The Idaho First-Generation Global Fellowship was created by the University of Idaho (U of I) and WorldStrides Higher Education (ISA/TEAN) to increase the understanding, confidence, and ability of first-generation University of Idaho students to seek out and participate in international educational experiences.

Up to ten (10) awards will be given per year to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • Applicant is a first-generation college student, as indicated on the student's application for admission to the U of I and/or the FAFSA;
  • Applicant has not yet completed their first year at the U of I;
  • Applicant is registered or in the process of registering as a degree seeking student at the U of I; and
  • Applicant maintains both good academic standing and satisfactory disciplinary status at the time of international experience.
Award amounts:
  • $1,000 towards an ISA/TEAN summer or internship program; or
  • $3,000 towards an ISA/TEAN semester, trimester, or yearlong program.
Fellowship preparatory and service requirements:
  • Prior to departure: Participation in the Idaho First-Generation Global Fellowship ongoing preparatory cohort that meets once per semester prior to departure, and also participation in at least one of the following additional preparatory activities:
    • Individual advising session with the U of I or ISA/TEAN;
    • U of I Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO);
    • Completion of a financial plan for the time abroad, and subsequent review with the U of I or ISA/TEAN; and/or
    • Other activities to be designated by the U of I and ISA/TEAN.
  • Post return: Commitment to participation in the U of I Education Abroad Ambassador Program, and also completion of at least two education abroad-focused activities/events per year through the conclusion of college career at the U of I:
    • Delivery of TRIO presentations and/or workshops;
    • Student roundtable/panel discussions and presentations;
    • Presenting to 100-level courses within student's major department;
    • Participating in U of I PDO activities; and/or
    • Other activities to be designated by the U of I and ISA/TEAN.
  • Fellows are welcome to apply for the paid ISA Global Ambassador (GA) Program, which would provide wages for activities completed as a U of I Education Abroad Ambassador. 
Application process:
  • Basic profile information;
  • A digital story (written essay or video) communicating the applicant's background and how they will maximize their time abroad;
  • Commitment to provide two (2) additional short stories throughout their education abroad journey to be shared for publication;
  • Signed release form; and
  • Signed Terms & Agreements form.
